Sunday, my family and youth minister came by my office Sunday afternoon. He had that hang dog look on his face when things aren't going well and he needs something. He was short one basketball coach for the Upwards Basketball league. He needed a coach for 7 kindergarten and first grade kiddos.
Anyway, I broke down and said I would do it.
Well, yesterday I contact all the parents to set up practice for today. Practice with these guys consists of learning to dribble and shoot baskets. Just learning the fundamentals.
All is well, not so. On my team are a set of twins who are big time ADHD. These guys already have a reputation for trouble. I don't really know what expect, but I plan on keeping everything moving at a pretty fast pace. Lot's of running and chasing balls. I am even thinking of recruiting an assistant, even though it is only seven kids.
I am looking for suggestions for ideas for practice and how to handle them during the games.
Why do I always get myself in these situations? I gotta learn to say no.

First, I am proud of you for helping out!!!!!Three tips that I have come up with.
1. Don't assume they know anything....out of bounds lines, anything. Let them surprise you with their knowledge. Understanding the words offense and defense will be hard enough!!!
2. Make SURE everyone has their OWN ball at practice-no waiting around on others to finish so they can get a ball.
3. Use that energy!!!!RUn ladders, suicides or whatever you want to call them. Sports are far more fun when your sides aren't hurting.
Well,we had our first practice. Started with the basics. The one of the twins is going to be ok. The other is a handful. I kept them all busy with various drills and such, but still this little guy could not stay focused. I am going recruit an assistant to help me out. I am sensing part of this kids problem is not so much him, but momma. Onward and upward!
